Independent Educational Evaluation
An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is an assessment conducted by a qualified professional who is not employed by the school district responsible for the student’s education. In Connecticut, if a parent or guardian disagrees with a school district’s evaluation of their child, they have the right to request an IEE at public expense. This means the district must either agree to pay for the evaluation or initiate due process to demonstrate that its own evaluation is appropriate.
Parents may request an IEE in any area of suspected disability that was evaluated or should have been evaluated by the district. Families may choose their own evaluator, but the evaluator must meet the same qualifications and criteria the district uses for its assessments.
The results of the IEE must be considered by the student’s educational team when making decisions about special education services. However, the team is not required to accept all of the evaluator’s recommendations.
